The Richie Kessel NYPA Watch, January 5, 2009 – By George J. Marlin
Assemb. Marc Alessi (D-Wading River), a frequent critic of no-bid contracts and political patronage at LIPA in the past, said he hoped federal scrutiny of any LIPA contract would shed more light on the utility’s past practices. “I’m not surprised there are federal subpoenas into former contracts at LIPA,” he said. “It became a disgusting patronage mill over the past 10 years.”

For the record, Richie Kessel, a Democratic appointee of Pataki, ran LIPA over the ten-year period referred to by Democratic Assemblyman Alessi.

You haven’t seen anything yet on patronage. Word is that Kessel is about to bring a number of people from LIPA including one or two politically connected people who are related to important pols. In Albany yesterday where our political class was gathered for Patterson’s State of the State friends tell me that Kessel was telling one and all that he wanted to take over LIPA and mush it together with NYPA. How that helps the upstate economy which is getting worse every day, I don’t get. Will the last person left in Buffalo please turn out the lights. Happy New Year.
